Overview
S. islandicus is a thermoacidophilic crenarcheon that lives in geothermal hot springs at pH 3 and 80ºC. In order to test for geographic isolation among microbial populations, we sequenced the genomes of seven strains from three distant geographic regions: Lassen National Park and Yellowstone National Park in North America and the Mutnovsky Volcano in Kamchatka, Russia.
This online database reflects the findings of Reno et al (2009) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. These data demonstrate biogeographic patterns in both the core genome (genes conserved across all strains) and the variable genome (those genes not found in all strains). To facilitate ease of access to the genome dynamics analysis, the geomes are presented here using Gbrowse.
