"Lumping of similar morphotypes denies the significance of the cryptic species long known in ciliates. Lumping flies in the face of fragmentary but hardly negligible evidence for genetic differences among phenotypically similar protists in different habitats and in different regions of the world. This issue may be of considerable importance in our understanding of global biodiversity, since the significance of protist biodiversity is not restricted to the naming of the ciliated protozoa, but also concerns their roles in the natural economy".....David L.
