Introduction to Endnote 6.0 for Life Science at UIUC

Endnote is a Three-in-One Tool:

Reference database

Store, manage and search in your own personal reference library. Each library can have up to 32,000 references or be 32K in size.

Bibliography maker

Compile lists of cited works automatically, using styles of major journals. An add-in allows you to work within Word Perfect and "Cite While You Write" works with Word 97, 2000, and XP allows instant formatting.

Online search tool

Using preconfigured connection files, will search internet databases and download references directly into your library. Endnote will also import references from text files, using specific filters designed to accurately assign data to your reference library.

Endnote’s website – www.endnote.com - provides additional connection files, filters and styles for downloading. You can also download a free demo version and a tutorial, join the mailing list and search a technical support database.

Some Endnote Terminology you'll need to know

Add-In – provided with the Endnote program for use with Wordperfect 2000 and 2002. It integrates Endnote commands into a submenu on the Tools menu and provides instant formatting and a traveling library.
Cite While You Write - provided with the Endnote program for use with Word 97, 2000 and XP. It integrates Endnote commands into a submenu on the Tools menu.
Connection files – predefined files which will access specific on-line databases on the Internet, using the Z39.50 information protocol. References retrieved with an Endnote connection fill will be downloaded directly into your library.
Filters – are templates used to import downloaded data from a variety of sources. Once you download the references in a tagged format, you then choose the appropriate filter to import the data into your library. Over 100 customizable formats are provided
Library - your database of references. Each library can hold up to 32,000 references. 17 reference types are provided (book, journal, etc) and you can also customize your own.
Styles – specific bibliographic formats, based on a particular journal or on more general style guides. Endnote comes with over 700 styles, and more can be found on the website. You can also modify styles and create new ones. They are also referred to as Output Syles.
Traveling Library - When you use EndNote’s Cite While You Write commands in Word, each formatted citation in your document is saved with field codes that embed reference data in the document. The paper contains a “traveling library” of EndNote references cited. This makes it easy to use your document on other machines and share your document with colleagues.
Web of Science - The ISI Web of Science is the Web interface for access to the ISI Citation Databases, which cover over 8,000 international journals in the sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities. Through ISI Links, the Web of Science also offers navigation to electronic full text journal articles, genetic information, and chemical and patent databases.Z39.50 - the protocol used to retrieve bibliographic data from on line databases. The database you wish to search must be able to communicate in this protocol for you to be able to use an Endnote connection file.
