Asteraceae

10-Helianthus achenes

[FMP-field: image]

These sunflower "seeds" are actually achenes. Each comes from the inferior ovary of one flower. While the gynoecium is syncarpous with 2 carpels, there is only one locule and one ovule, and the achenes contain a single seed. This example is Helianthus annuus, the species from which commercially available sunflower seeds are produced.
