Asteraceae

12-Liatris habit

[FMP-field: image]

Several different species of Liatris, blazing star, can be found in prairies; all are herbaceous perennials. This is Liatris spicata, Marsh Blazing Star, growing with Euphorbia corollata (Euphorbiaceae) at Gensburg-Markham Prairie Nature Preserve in southern Cook County, Illinois. In Liatris, the heads are discoid, that is they only contain disk flowers. The heads are arranged in spike-like secondary inflorescences.
