Asteraceae

17-Liatris achene

[FMP-field: image]

This an extreme close-up of one achene of Liatris aspera. The achene comes from the inferior ovary, while the pappus is feather-like to aid in wind dispersal. Many (but by not means all) members of the Asteraceae have a feather-like pappus for wind dispersal.
