Asteraceae

3-Helianthus field

[FMP-field: image]

The Asteraceae are primarily herbaceous, although woody members occur, mostly on oceanic islands and on isolated mountain tops in the tropics. What looks like a single flower is actually a head or capitulum inflorescence. This is a photo of a field of sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) grown for seed.

Photo taken by K. R. Robertson in North Dakota.
