Monoecy — flowers imperfect; staminate and carpellate flowers on same plant

  • are commonly wind pollinated species, such as oaks and birch (Fagaceae and Betulaceae)
  • most common in temperate regions
  • self-pollination is possible but less likely
  • ensures outcrossing by spatial separation
