Ericaceae

3-Rhododendron shrub

[FMP-field: image]

Most members of the Ericaceae are small to large shrubs. We don't see many members of this family in Illinois, either in the wild or in cultivation, as they prefer acidic soil. The leaves are alternate, simple, and mostly entire; they can be evergreen or deciduous. Many members of this family are striking ornamental plants, such as this plant: Rhododendron 'Purpureum Elegans', a hybrid derived from R. catawbiense.
