Fruits

28-Schizocarps, Zizia

[FMP-field: image]

Schizocarps are fruits produced from a syncarpous gynoecium that split apart into maturity into mericarps. This splitting is not the same as dehiscing-a dehiscent fruit splits open to release the seeds. In a schizocarp, the mericarps that split away contain one seed surrounded by tissue derived from the ovary wall.

These are the fruits of a member of the umbel family (Apiaceae): Zizia aurea, Golden Alexanders.
