Fruits

44-Legumes

Legumes are fruits produced by the legume family (Fabaceae). They all come from a single carpel. Most definitions of legumes say that they are similar to follicles, except that they dehisce along both sides, as in the pod of wild indigo (Baptisia australis) on the left.

However, few legumes are actually like this, and there is an enormous diversity of fruits in this family. Some familiar examples of legumes are the various kinds of beans shown on the right.
