Fruits: 4 nutlets, pericarp tightly surrounds each ovule

Habit: Annual or perennial herbs, rarely shrubs, woody vines or trees; aromatic; stems square 9 in cross section

Leaves: Opposite or whorled, simple, no stipules; glandular trichomes with essential oils
