| Ficus aurea, strangler fig. Seeds of this species germinate up in the crown of another tree, and the plant first grows as an epiphyte. The aerial roots grow down over the surfacte of the host tree until they reach the ground. Over time, the strangler fig enlarges both its crown and root system. Evenutally, the host tree can even be shaded out and killed by the strangler fig. |
