Orchidaceae

8-Cattleya flowers

[FMP-field: image]

Flowers of the genus Cattleya are perhaps the most familiar orchids, and they are frequently in corsages. Flowers of essentially all Orchidaceae are zygomorphic. There are 3 sepals and 3 petals; however the uppermost petal is modified to form the lip. The flowers are resupinate, that is they twist 180 degrees, and the lip appears to be the lowest petal, and it often is a landing platform for pollinators. In the center of the flower is the column, which is formed from the fusion of the androecium and gynoecium.
