Ranunculaceae

37-Actaea pachypoda habit

[FMP-field: image]

The common name of Actaea pachypoda is white baneberry, well named because the fruits. The fruits are unusual in several respects. First they are porcelain white, not a common color for fruits, and they look like the eyes of old fashioned China dolls. Second, most fruits in the Ranunculaceae are dry and are either follicles or achenes. Third, most berries come from a syncarpous gynoecium with 2 or more connate carpels, but in Actaea the berries develop from one free carpel. Lastly, the berries are poisonous (hence the name 'baneberry')
