This is a longitudinal section of a flower of Caltha palustris; petals are lacking but otherwise it is similar to Eranthis hyemalis. Note the numerous stamens (which are NOT laminar as in Magnoliaceae) and several free carpels that have numerous ovules with marginal placentation. Photo by K.R. Robertson & D. L.
