The Scrophulariaceae is found nearly worldwide. There are about 220 genera and 4,500 species. Most members of the family are herbaceous plants and are especially diverse in North Temperate regions; some members also occur at high elevations of mountains in the tropics. Modern molecular data indicates that the traditional Scrophulariaceae is NOT a monophyletic family. In the textbook by Judd et al., most of the traditional Scrophulariaceae are placed in another family, the Plantaginaceae, while the Scrophulariaceae is used in a very strict sense.
