The stem is the part of the plant that carries the leaves and reproductive structures. It is characterized by the presence of nodes and buds (contrary of roots). Stems might be aerial or subterranean.

Here are the aerial parts, including stems, leaves and reproductive parts (open flowers and floral buds), of Buxus sempervirens.
