On this winter twig of Prunus serotina (black cherry) you can easily distinguish the lenticels: they are small pores over the cork surface of the stem (or other plant parts). They allow gas exchange between the atmosphere and the internal tissues.

The bud scale scars are well-visible on the photo.

Odor can be used as a diagnostic character for this species of Prunus: this twig when chewed or scraped gives off the flavor and odor of almonds.
