Flowers: Perfect, zygomorphic (or regular), 1 petal with SPUR; anthers with a nectary that protrudes into spur; carpels 3, syncarpous; ovary superior, ovules many, parietal; two types of flowers: CHASMOGAMOUS and CLEISTOGAMOUS

Inflorescences: Flowers solitary and scapose or in racemes, panicles, or cymes

Fruits: Loculicidal capsules, explosively dehiscent in Viola; also berries, nuts

Habit: Annual or perennial herbs; shrubs and trees in the tropics

Leaves: Simple, alternate, with stipules, often toothed, sometimes lobed or dissected
