We offer a web application, named LSC-Slideshow, which creates a web
slideshow by providing a framework to navigate through a collection of
images. These can include pictures from a digital camera or PowerPoint
presentation that has been exported as a series of images files. Once
you have your folder of images, the procedure to create the slideshow
is simple:
- Save your images in the GIF, JPG or PNG format.
- Make sure that your files are named so that when sorted
alphabetically they appear in the order you wish. Use leading zeros to prevent an order like: Slide1, Slide10, Slide2. You'll want: Slide01, Slide02, Slide10.
- Create a folder on the Life Sciences web server and upload the
images. You'll want to create a separate folder for each lecture or
presentation.
- Test the slideshow with a URL like:
http://www.life.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/slideshow?dir=/path/to/imagedir
The /path/to/imagedir will be the same path that you would use if you were going to view the images directly via the web. So, if you could view an image with the URL:
http://www.life.uiuc.edu/csb/400/lecture1/Slide01.jpg
the /path/to/imagedir would be '/csb/400/lecture1', and the Slideshow URL would be:
http://www.life.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/slideshow?dir=/csb/400/lecture1
LSC-Slideshow has a simple navigation system with Previous and Next
links, and the option to go to a specific slide number. More advanced
features like image rotation, scaling, adding descriptive text are
possible by creating a configuration file. Please contact us for
details.
Tips for Exporting Images from PowerPoint
When exporting a PowerPoint presentation, slide transitions and
animations are not retained, nor are slide notes supported.
To export your PowerPoint presentation to a folder of images, first
you convert your presentation to individual "snapshots" as
follows:
- When your presentation is complete select File->Save As...
- Provide a name the folder in the Save As field.
- In the Format menu, select either JPEG, PNG or
GIF. For most slides containing photographs, jpeg will give you the
best results, though you may want to experiment.

- Next click on Options and under "Save slides as graphics
files" be sure "Save every slide" is checked. Dots per
inch should be set to 72. For a web slideshow, anything
higher adds needlessly to the file size. Note that at this time you can
adjust compression and slide dimensions if you like.
