We honor here two graduate students in the School of Integrative Biology (SIB), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They are Dessireé Zerpa Catanho (for the 2020 Govindjee and Rajni Award) and Ingrid Romero Valero, (for the 2020 Robert Emerson Award).
Dessireé Zerpa Catanho, the 2020 recipient of the Govindjee & Rajni Govindjee award for Excellence in Biological Research (see: sib.illinois.edu/graduate/grants/Govindjee); she was a PhD student in Dr. Ray Ming’s Lab (Department of Plant Biology, UIUC). Her research used genomics and molecular biology to study sex chromosomes and sex determination in Caricaceae, such as papaya. Information can be found on: Ultra-long DNA molecule isolation from plant nuclei for ultra-long read genome sequencing and Differential gene expression among three sex types reveals a CpMS1 for sex differentiation in papaya
Ingrid Romero Valero, the 2020 Robert Emerson Memorial Awardee of the School of Integrative Biology (see: sib.illinois.edu/graduate/grants/Emerson), worked in Surangi Punyasena’s Lab (Program in Plant Biology, UIUC). Her research used optical superresolution microscopy and machine learning to create a higher throughput and quantitative workflow for palynological analysis. Some information can be found on:
Ingrid was also awarded, for Photo of the Year 2017, the Govindjee & Rajni Govindjee award for Excellence in Biological Research.
