42-Monocarpous gynoecium

[FMP-field: image]

This is a closer view of the same flower of Prunus seen in the previous slide. In the very center of the flower is a single carpel. A carpel is the basic unit of a gynoecium. This flower only has one carpel, and flowers like this are said to have a monocarpous gynoecium.

You may have used the word "pistil" in other courses — if so, then this flower has a simple pistil. In PB260 we prefer to describe the carpels rather than use the word pistil.
