Fruits

50-Accessory fruit

[FMP-field: image]

In an accessory fruit, part of the whole fruiting structure comes from tissue other than the ovary.

In a strawberry, the actual fruits are achenes produced from ovaries. Since there are many distinct carpels in the flower, there are many achenes. The fleshy part of a strawberry comes from the cone- shaped receptacle (see Slides 6 & 7 above).

Hence, a whole strawberry is an accessory fruit with achenes.
