Salicaceae

6-Salix catkins

[FMP-field: image]

Individual male and female flowers of Salix exigua, sandbar willow. Note that both sexes of flowers have bracts and nectar glands. The nectar glands present the sepals. Petals are absent. Each male flower has only two stamens. The female flower has a syncarpous gynoecium of 2 carpels and a superior ovary.

The presence of nectar glands in the flowers indicates that they are pollinated by insects.
