In the Fagaceae and Betulaceae, you will remember that catkins are associated with wind pollination. However, the genus Salix is pollinated by insects, particularly bees, that visit the flowers to collect nectar produced by the nectar glands.
This drawing is from a book by Otto E. Plath entitled "Bumblebees and their ways", published in 1934. However, the writing of Otto Plath's daughter, Sylvia Plath, are better known. Dr. Robertson can tell you a great story about the burning of the building at Harvard University where Otto Plath worked . |
